Winning the Race for a NASCAR Fan's Life

Patric Hettman of East Stroudsburg began having heart attack symptoms just before the start of the Pennsylvania 500. Doctors from Lehigh Valley Hospital were on-site and activated the hospital's MI Alert (heart attack response) program.

Hettman (shown at right, center, with flight nurse Judy Gagnon, R.N. and flight paramedic Keith Tokonitz) needed to have his heart restarted with a defibrillator twice during the MedEvac flight to  the hospital, and twice more on the ground as he was rushed to the cardiac catheterization lab. A cardiologist found the blocked artery, cleared it and put in two stents to prop it open.

“If this had happened at home, I'd be dead,” Hettman says. “The helicopter saved my life. Thank God for Lehigh Valley Hospital.”
